About Us

Women Working Worldwide is a UK based organisation that works with an international network of women workers. It was set up in the mid 1980s and has since developed a reputation for cutting edge action research and campaign work.

Over the last 20 years we have conducted collaborative research and campaign initiatives with partners in Asia, Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe. We focus on supporting the rights of women working in commodity chains that supply the UK and other European countries with consumer goods.

Our Ethos

Much work surrounding labour rights and decent work tends to focus on 'top down' measures such as corporate social responsibility codes. Whilst this focus is relevant it does not encompass the entire scope of work needed to effect change. Our central ethos is that it is women themselves who are calling for change in their working conditions and networks such as WWW can make sure that their voices are heard and not ignored.

One of WWW's principal strengths is that our project work is led by our partner organisations. Our projects are developed in consultation with those in our network and the projects themselves are nearly always born of needs expressed by our partners. Although members are not part of WWW's structure in that there is no formal network membership, it is the collaboration with and between these organisations that is the heart of WWW's work.

The project workshops that bring these groups together are crucial to the maintenance of WWW's sense of direction and identity. Whilst taking its lead from these discussions between women workers' organisations, the path of WWW's work is also determined in part through networking with organisations in the UK, Europe and North America.
